Caroline McManus Phd

Dr. Caroline McManus, the founder of “Reading Gladly,” provides individual and small group training in a deep and nuanced engagement with literary texts (literal comprehension, stylistic analysis, historical contextualization, pedagogical strategies, personal relevance, and more).  Sessions are available remotely or in person, as mutually determined, and specifically designed to meet the needs of teachers (pre-K through post-secondary), students, and all curious readers, regardless of age or skill level, who seek continuing education for personal or professional development.

The “Reading Gladly” practice is unique in that it

• individuates instructional methods and content to meet pragmatic goals and specific needs and interests

• draws on the expertise of an award-winning English professor who has trained single- and multiple-subject credential students, offered professional development for both public and private school teachers, and published a wide range of scholarship

• encourages personal and communal interactions with texts by acknowledging that reading, learning, and teaching are deeply emotional processes and providing collaborative mentorship

• grounds its practice in the belief that reading helps us to make sense of our lives and our loves and to make choices that matter

Participants will:

• practice methods of observation and analysis used by professional readers, teachers, and critics

• discover more, and more profound, meaning from the books they’ve been assigned or have elected to read, from wordless picture books to Shakespeare’s plays to contemporary fiction and poetry (personalized reading lists based on thematic interests or specific authors, genres, or time periods designed upon request)

• develop an individual reading practice that supports meaning-making throughout life’s many stages
